PHIL: Wow how can I describe what being a part of this documentary has meant to me. How would you describe the impact that being a part of “Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead” has had on your life? So many people have messaged me at how inspiring it is, and that right after they saw it they went out and bought fruits, vegetables and even juicers!īEAR: My wife and kids keep me motivated and grounded when times seem rough. Joe, and all involved, have made such a loving, wonderful film that touches the heart and soul of the people that see it. PHIL: I stay motivated by thinking of all the people whose lives the film will change. How do you stay motivated during the hard moments?

The biggest challenge? Not to eat a lot of meat during the week like I used to!

I especially like the fruit juices that my wife makes.

I am still Urticaria free and off of my meds! Maybe a cold here or there, but not much else.īEAR: I haven’t fully embraced juice-fasting yet because of health concerns, but I do juice. PHIL: I really have had no big health challenges since juicing. What has been the biggest challenge for you since embracing the Reboot lifestyle? I’m back to work and eating a lot healthier. PHIL: I am doing well with respect to eating habits, I am following Dr Fuhrman’s diet in his book and exercising (cardio, walks and weights).īEAR: I am also doing well. Hi Phil & Bear, How are you doing these days? It really changes the way you look at nutrition, but I'm not going out to preach this involuntary commercial for juicers anytime soon. One of the most common questions we hear after someone sees “Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead” is always: “How are Phil and Bear doing?” Well, we talk to the Brothers all the time, and here are some updates in their own words! I would even have liked to see Phil further down the line, and let off of Cross for a bit so that could have been accomplished. He had a hard life and turned to food, and he was human and likable compared to Cross' blunt and unlikable presence onscreen. Phil humanizes the film, because he was a very large individual with bad eating habits and a sedentary job as a truck driver.

If he hadn't stumbled upon Phil Staples and got him to join his crusade for juicing, this movie would be completely flat and pointless. It seems that he was simply trying to emulate Super Size Me's message by showing the alternative to a fast food diet. Cross also blindly limits the means of obesity to willpower though, which is ignoring the state of the American economy and health care system in this country. Cross isn't all too interesting, though his interviews with the American people really brought about a sense of community and showed that everyone struggles with willpower.

The film includes completely stupid and cheesy animation, and a large chunk of it is about himself and his own struggle with weight. My main problem, I would have to say, is Cross' ignorance and the fact that he doesn't understand what the audience wants to see. That doesn't take away from his sincerity or the film's actual usefulness as a means to educate. For one, the director of the film has never directed anything else in his life, and he is in fact a highly paid executive. Getting that out of the way, I have a couple of problems with this film. No matter what I can at least say with certainty that this documentary has changed the way I view health and juice fasts.
